Treatment Needs Assessment
A Treatment Needs Assessment, aka “Bio-Psycho-Social Assessment”, is essential in determining if an individual is experiencing substance use and/or other mental health related problems, identifying the nature of the individual’s presenting problem(s), recommending an appropriate level of care when deemed necessary, and implementation of the individual’s treatment plan prior to entering treatment.
During a treatment needs assessment, the following will be assessed and discussed as applicable, but is not limited to:
Your lifetime history of using substances, including behaviors associated with your use of substances.
Past history of experiencing substance withdrawal.
Your potential of experiencing withdrawal when you enter treatment.
Your full history of bio-medical conditions and medications you presently use to treat your health conditions.
Your risk of contracting or spreading communicable disease and your need to have a physical examination.
Your ability to manage your healthcare needs and daily activities of living.
A complete review of your mental health history, including present medications you are taking to treat your mental health condition(s).
Identifying whether you are presently impacted by specific mental health symptoms, need to engage in medication management, or receive a psychiatric evaluation.
Identifying if you possess effective coping skills and are not overwhelmed by life stressors.
Your insight towards your presenting problems and your willingness to address identified problems within your life.
Your ability to refrain from continued substance use.
Awareness of your associations and triggers to your substance use.
The danger you pose to yourself and/or others when you use substances.
Determining if your living environment is conducive to your well-being, treatment needs, and sustaining abstinence.
Determining if you possess healthy friendships and if you are in need of a support group.
Your educational, employment, and criminal history.
Common reasons individuals seek a treatment needs assessment is because they were involved in a substance use related incident and have been referred by a Judge, Probation Officer, Employer, DCFS Caseworker, or family member to have an assessment. Other reasons include DUI Offenders that have been classified as Significant Risk or High-Risk and need to complete treatment in order to satisfy their DUI requirements with the Court and/or Secretary of State.
